Chapter One – The Need Of More. – 1,282 Words.
“We need more!” Was the first thing Yazmin, one of my room mates said after she burst into my room. I needed to remind myself that the next time I went to Wal-Mart to pick up a lock.
I swung around in my swirly chair to face the red head. She was half slumped in my door jam, her black spandex shirt askew showing off half her left nipple. Splendid. It wasn’t even ten o’clock at night and she was already blazing drunk.
“What do you need more of?” I asked, making sure I talked slow, or other wise Yazmin wouldn’t have been able to understand me and I would have had to repeat myself half a dozen times. She didn’t work, she invited people over and got drunk pretty much every night, and some days. I wasn’t sure how she came up with rent money but as long as I got her cut at the end of each month I didn’t wonder.
“Alcohol!” She exclaimed, most of her makeup was smudged, black eyeliner colored her eyes making her look like a raccoon and her red lipstick was smeared around her lips.
I took in a deep breath and gave her a bland face. “Well Hun your shit out of luck.” This wasn’t the first time that Yazmin had asked me to go on an alcoholic run for her. And most of the time I did go to fetch her more because she tended to run out long before the night was over. But tonight just wasn’t the right night. I still had to study for a while yet for the quiz I had tomorrow morning at six am at Boston College and then right after I had work at the local Veterinarian hospital.
“Come on! I’m dying of thirst here, and there are half a dozen people up stairs gulping at air.” Yazmin makes the motion of trying to walk farther into my room but isn’t very successful. She may be talking fine but her motor skills weren’t cowaperating. Which was strange because you usually slurred first then fell on your face.
I shake my head. “I can’t Yazmin I have so much to do tonight and I have to get up early tomorrow morning.”
“Please!” She begged, her big brown eyes pleading. I was pretty sure she was an alcoholic but who was I to judge? I was a workaholic.
“No” My tone is firm, letting her know I was serious.
Yazmin stood a few feet in my room, looking pitiful in her drunken state. “But if you don’t go out and buy us some alcohol then one of us are bound to go out ourselves. And in our condition you never know what may happen.”
I could just picture getting a call at midnight, the police on the other line telling me that my room mate Yazmin has gotten into a car crash. I sighed heavily. “Fine I’ll go get you some alcohol.”
“Yeah! You are the bestest.” She screams while jumping up and down, though haphazardly.
“I am only doing this to protect innocent bystanders.” I say getting up. “Now give me some cash and a list of what you want.”
…
It was like a freaking grocery list. I thought as I looked at the long list of what Yazmin and her friends wanted. I was in the parking lot of the nearest liquor store, Harmony Liquors. My head was shaking slowly as I read the different types of alcohol they wanted.
How was it humanly possible to consume so much liquid? Piss and drink at the same time?
But I held over three hundred dollars in my hand and I was already at the liquor place. I made sure to lock my truck after I got out of it, you never knew who may be snooping around a liquor store and I might just be in the building for a while.
As I walked into the brightly lit building the clerk behind the desk gave me a strange look. I simply smiled back not caring what he thought about me in my pj’s. I wore a pair of soccor shorts and a baggy red socks shirt, plus my hair was in a pony tail that was along the lines of falling out.
A half an hour later, after searching numerous times up and down the isles for all the items I was finally able to confront the clerk.
“Geeze, having a party?” The slightly balding man asked as I started pilling my collection onto the counter. Good thing they had grocery carts here.
I smiled a half smile. “Something like that.”
Before the clerk had even rung threw half my items a women had walked in, found what she needed and was in line behind me. It was kind of embarrassing.
“You’ll be having quite the party.” The women behind me commented. I turned, cheeks a little red.
“Its not for me, but it’s uh… kind of hard to explain…” I laughed a little bit. The women was tall, very tall, at least six feet. She had long blonde hair and cool blue eyes. I had to lean my head back a bit to give her a sheepish smile. I was only five feet.
She laughed a bit as well. Showing off a pair of pearly white teeth that were perfectly strait.
“Your total is two hundred sixty two dolors and seventy nine cents.” The clerk sais before I can reply to the blonde.
To spend that much money on alcohol in one night was absurd, but then again it wasn’t my money. And plus I wouldn’t tell Yazmin how much everything actually cost. Unless she asked that was. She usually didn’t ask though and the majority of the time I got to keep the change. Which this change was just under a hundred dollars.
I pilled everything into the cart and after thanking the clerk I made my way out. I drove a dark blue Toyota truck. It was a small thing with only a booth seet in the front and a short bed. And even though I had a lot of alcohol my bed would do the trick. After I pilled the now bagged bottles into the back of my truck I pushed the cart back near the entrance, where there were other carts.
My truck key was attached to a massive collection of other keys plus some key charms on my key chain that I had shoved into my pocket. Yeah it weighed my pants down and at times it was awkward to cary but each key and charm i had on the ring was important. So as I was searching threw my mass collection in the dim light of the Harmonies parking lot the woman who had talked to me earlier came out.
“Having some trouble?” She asked, carrying her single brown bag.
I shake my head, never turning my head from where I was searching. “No I got it. Just looking for my truck key.” Yeah it was a little embarising to be looking for the key but I’d probably never see the woman again so who cared.
“Alright, well maybe we’ll see each other another day.” Her tone was pleasant and it had me picking my head up from my search and smilling at her. I hadn’t noticed it before but now I saw that her car was right besides me. The blonde drove a red mustang. Well Dang.
I snorted lightly, doubtful. I don’t drink and Yazmin can only push me so many times… “Yeah s…”
The rest of my reply was cut off by a loud SSCCRREEAACCHH!!!
Chapter Two – Consumed. – 864 Words
I blinked stupidly a few times, confused with what I was now confronted with. My hands were frozen in their search for the key as my mind processed what it had just seen. Had a car really just dashed into the parking lot, screeched to a halt thrown out a body and then fish tailed it out of the lot?
The blond managed to get into working order before me, she actually ran to where the dark form now laid. I followed, though at a more sedate pace.
“Oh fuck!” She exclaims hovering over the still form.
As I get closer I noticed something. I’d originally been frozen because I had thought the car had thrown out a human. But now that I could see the dark form in the almost full moon of the night I was able to take in a light breath. The still figer wasn’t that of a human, no it was that of a dog, yes a large dog but a dog non the less.
“It’s alright,” I say trying to calm the woman beside me. “The dogs still breathing, which is a good sign.”
The woman turns to me, I could have sworn her eyes were flashing silver but it was most likely only the moons reflection. Now it may seem disturbing that I was relieved that the body was that of an animals and not a humans, but what you have to remember is that I am a vet. I wouldn’t know what to do with a human but dogs? I am very familiar with their anatomy.
It was late enough that most vet offices were closed, but I was the next best thing. I went to kneel besides the grey dog, my mind already centered on vet technical’s.
“Back off.” The blonde growls, her vocals no longer sweet and husky. In fact her tone had deepened, not seductively either and there was an edge to each word that had me pausing. I was half bent, my knees extended towards the dog along with my hands. But the warning had me poised in my position. My head turned in the blondes direction, right eyebrow raised in question.
“I can help, I’m a Vet Tech.” I say, tone soothing.
She snorts, disbelieve coloring her features. “You wont be able to help him you stupid h…” it sounded as though she was going to continue on her snarling rant but for some odd reason she cuts it off short. “Just back off and go on your own way.” With the last she shoves a hand in her pocket and pulls out a cell phone.
“Your not going to get any vets this time of night.” I say, it was sad but true, in my own personal thoughts there should be some 24 hour vet clinics. But most if not all vet clinics were under staffed and over budgeted.
“I’m not calling a fucking vets office!” The blond snarls. “Now get out of here!” I just about tip over when the blonde takes a menacing step towards me, I hadn’t been expecting her to make actual physical threats.
“Aright!” Even I wasn’t going to stick around for a dog when there was a threat to my own life. That would just be stupid. Collecting myself I turned away from the two and made my way to my truck.
Halfway to my vehicle two sounds made me stop. The first was the blonde speaking, probably on her cell phone. The only thing that I really caught was her saying ‘found him.’ And then the other sound that made me stop was a low whining sound. I was surprised that I could hear it from here, but it had me turning.
The blond was faced away from me, hovering around her phone. The dog was still lying pitifully in the same place, its dark coat melding in with the dark night and black tar. But it’s eyes were now open. How I saw them from where I stood I wasn’t sure, but they were clear and sparkling.
‘Help.’ A childish voice echoed threw my head, it belonged to that of my guessing of a ten to twelve year old boy. Alright Baha as soon as you get home its time to sleep. I thought to myself, I was acting half delirious, thinking that the dog was talking to me in my head.
I shook myself and then…met the dogs eyes once again. The blonde was still talking on the phone…
I know that I had said that even I wouldn’t risk my life for a dog but I do believe I was lying. Plus what was the blonde going to do? Beat me with her purse.
I huffed out a breath and made my way back. “I’m going to help this dog weather you want me to or not.” I say, once I was two feet from the dog, to the blonde. Then kneeling. “You can tell me off after though.” I laugh a little bit at the end of my sentence.
If there was a reply from the blonde I didn’t register it because my body suddenly filled with raging pain.
Chapter Three – How Peculiar – 1,260 Words
I’d never expearianced anything like what I was feeling. Sure I’d had shots at doctors offices, been burned a few times and have tripped and fallen. But to be totally consumed by pain, it was something all together different.
The violence of what was storming threw my every nerve had happened after I had knelt down, then reached out my right hand to touch the black fur of the dog. As soon as my palm had rested against the wet fur feeling simply erupted threwout my entire being.
My spine bowed of its own accord, my head just about scraping against the tar though my hand still rested again the canine. The only thing that I could hear was the rushing blood threw my veins as it heated.
It was incomprehensible what was happening to me, I didn’t understand it and if it wasn’t for the spasms of pain jirating my very soul I would have probably passed out. I couldn’t see, my vision had turned black, though there was a flashing of static white light on the outer edges of my sight.
I wasn’t sure how long it lasted, second, minutes, hours but slowly, ever so slowly the heated, molten lava like pain receded. A coolness, like fall rain took over where the fire had been. The cold, or it wasn’t really cold, more like a solid breeze started in my right hand, the hand touching the dog. Actualy solid wasn’t right to describe the cold. It was more like a liquid.
The coolness was following the paths of my blood filled veins, enwrapping my nerves and soothing the pain. It was an odd sensation really, to actually be able to feel the cold wash away the heat. Up and up the frost traveled, and then once it hit the top of my right shoulder it shot to the left. A silent breath escaped my lips as a cod chill splashed out from my heart.
My strung out body crashed in relief, my hand finally braking contact with the dark fur of the large dog. And so I layed there, in the middle of a rather vacant parking lot of a liquor stoor, trembling from the turmoil that had just confusingly taken over my body.
“Holy fucking shit.” The husky voice of the blonde entered my ears. If I had had the strength I would have smiled at the shock I heard in her stern tone.
A soft whinning sounded from near by, the sound of shoufling soon followed. I was pretty sure that my nerve endings were still fraid from what had happened because I barely felt the huge dog crawl on top of me. I couldn’t move any part of my body besides my eyes. They watched solomly as the black dog huffed its upper half upon my strangly bent one. Yes I was still in the uncomfortable position of my calfs being underneath my thighs and my feet splayed out to the side.
The dog, when settled, with its big paws resting just bellow my breasts and its head pillowed upon them, looked at me with its dark eyes. Although animals could not speak verbally the emotions swirling threw the expresionat eyes of the dog spoke more then words ever could.
The depths thanked me. Of that much I was sure. For what the canine was thanking me for I wasn’t sure, it was still fuzy to me what I had just expearianced.
Rather quickly my vision started to blur, the edged blackening. And rather quickly my mind blured, my entire being blackened.
…
“I don’t know how to describe what I saw…” Heven said, her light blue eyes scanning over the prone body of the strange women. She was trying to put into words what she had witnessed for her alpha, but… it was one of those things where you would have had had to been there to fully comprehend.
Heven had called her Alpha as soon as it locked in her mind that the dog like form had been in fact the missing member of their clan.
Landon, the wolf cub had only been missing for about five hours, so the car dumping him right in her path had taken her by surprise.
“Tell me what you can then.” Keegan stated monotone in his drawling vocals. His strongly featured faced gave little emotion to play off of. Heven wasn’t sure what her Alpha thought of the sitchuation and that put her slightly on edge.
She took a short moment to frais her beginning. And while she was in her own thoughts Keegan moved. His steps were graceful for a man of his height and build. Though if you knew his history it wouldn’t surprise you.
Keegan’s nostrils flaired as he neared the two still forms. He took in the easy, familiar scent of Landon, though it was laced with some unknown tinges as well. The girls still form let off a faint fragrance, one that reminded Keegan of not only the stronger smells you got from walking threw the woods when it had just rained but also what you would imagin a field of spring wild flowers would be scented like in full bloom.
As with every other being he had met, Keegan filed the scent into his mind. It was easier for him to remember scents then faces. And besides one could alter their features but the reek of someone always stayed the same.
“Trinity and I were going to get a little tipsy tonight…” Heven started, Keegan sighed slightly and turned his head. Heven had been under his rule for close to five years now and it never seaced to amaze him how talkative she was. Heven could stretch a five minute expeariance to a winded twenty minute speech.
“Because she got permoted at her job. She is now…”
“Heven.” Keegan growled lowly, his tone wasn’t yet threatening, though it did get past his meaning.
She smiled sheepishly at her tall Alpha. “Right.” And then after switching a few things around in her mind she started speaking again.
This time Keegan knew that he was getting the important information just by the now briefe and sharp note of her voice. He kept an ear on what she had to say while he continued examining the pair.
Both Landon and the women were passed out cold, breathing shallow in that of deep sleep. The position in which they were in made Keegan cringe. If the woman was to wake up in the next few minutes she would find her entire lower body prayd by needles from the lack of blood able to run threw her muscle.
“And then she touched him..” Heven was saying as Keegan took the few steps to hover over the pair. He bent over, still keeping an ear on Heven though, and wrapped his hands around Landons still form. The pup mewled a bit in pain but didn’t awaken. Keegan lifted the pup, who weighed just over one hundred pounds like he was a chiwowa. He only slid the pup off the girl and placed him besides her, still having their bodies touch.
Keegan himself senced that there was something different about the girl, what he wasn’t sure.
“That’s about it.” Heven finished just as Keegan took both of the girls legs and straitened them out from under her.
He nodded his head, achnowleging to Heven that he understood her side of the story.
“We’ll bring them both back to the camp.” He drawled simply, his fingers tingling peculiarly.
Chapter Four – Wake Up – 2,165 Words
It felt like I was swimming in a pool of fluff. You know the stuff you have with a Penutbutter sandwich? I knew that I could move my muscles but it simply took too much effort.
Slowly my body came alive, first the nerves of my fingers and toes then I felt the soarness threwout myself. There was a nagging pain not only throughout my lower region, legs like my thighs and calfs and such. But there was also a thrumming pain vibrating threw the muscles of my… pretty much entire back.
My eyes felt heavy throughout the entire waking process, never once opening. I contempled going back to sleep, but then my skin started to itch. My skin felt as though I had taken a long run in 90 degree wether and had let the sweat dry.
I groaned in complaint, not wanting to move but knowing that I had to. While I was going threw the long process of opening my tired and dry eyes I heard something peculiar. It sounded much like someone snoring quietly.
… Odd. Had I returned with the alcohol last night and joined Yazmin? I never had before but there was always a first time for everything.
Snorting out a breath of air threw my nose I finaly forced my eyes to open. They were cloudy and hurt from lack of water, but a few rounds of blinking and rubbing had them viewing my familiar room.
When had I painted my ceiling dark grey? I wondered strangly. Last time I had checked it was white… The someone in my bed snorted besides me, bringing my attention from my ceiling to them.
The sight of the black dog laying on top of my covers had memories flashing back to me in stark reality, though they were blured and jared, not making sence. It also had me relising that I wasn’t in my own room.
For some odd reason my heart picked up a few paces and I scrambled from under the black covers of the bed. I kind of crouched on the white fluffy pillow, back leaning against the headboard as I took in my surroundings. Dark grey ceiling, light grey walls, white carpet. Besides the twin sized bed there was only a dark brown dresser for furniture. On the wall to the left of my was a decent sized window while to the right was a door… which happened to open right as my eyes fell on it.
The blonde from what I remembered of last night walked in, a grin brightening her already beautiful features. “I knew I heard you awake.” She said, walking a few feet into the room.
I smiled hesitantly, not really sure what to make of this sitchuation. Yes I was kind of freaked, but at the same time I was of a rashional mind so I was taking in the facts before I totally lost it.
“How are you feeling?”
“Alive.” I stated dryly.
A deep chuckle entered the room followed by a man who had longer hair then I did. And that was saying something. Threw the turmoil of last night my strict bun had kept its place but when down it hit my mid back. This mans hair was the color of a full moon struck night. And it fell in rough waves down to the tips of his long fingers.
“That’s good.” His voice was deep and musculin, which you wouldn’t have figered coming from a man with such long hair. He walked around the blonde woman, his height a good four inches taller then hers. There was a sharp smile on his angular features, within his smile I saw that his canine teeth were peculiarly sharp.
I quirked my right eyebrow as he came as close as to lean his knees up against the bed. He was wearing a black t-shirt with the band ‘Soundgarden’ in the middle I’d heard of the band but never listened to them before. His pants were a dull grey that matched rooms walls and also the strange highlights in his hair. They were tight, hugging his obviously muscled legs. My eyes were level with the black and gray swirled belt he wore, which had a skull as a buckle.
“Maddox.” The blonde said, warning coloring her tone.
“I’m just looking.” Maddox said almost innocently, turning his upper half around to look back at her, his right hand slipping into his front pants pocket as he did so.
I had only meant to laugh in my head at my thoughts but an almost giggle did leave my lips.
The both of them laid eyes upon me, the blondes cool blue Maddox’s steel gray. “Sorry.” I said, still laughing.
“Whats so funny?” Maddox asked, perplexed.
I blinked my eyes a few times, while I contoled my laughing. “I was just thinking how it was amazing how you managed to slip your hand into the pocket of your pants with them being so tight.” I know, it was a weird thing to be laughing at, with the whole not knowing these people and not knowing where I was.. But I couldn’t help myself, it’s a way of coping I guess. Focusing in on the ridiculous and pushing the scarier thoughts into the backround.
The blonde burst into laughter, while Maddox gave me a look that said he thought I was crazy.
“I ask him all the time if it cuts off the circulation to his cock.”
“For both of your guys information, these pants do not cut off the circulation to my cock. In fact tight pants are more comfortable and act as a cacoon of sorts so that my penis isn’t flying around all the time.” He states dryly, glairing indignatly at the blonde woman.
She simply shakes her head while laughing lightly. “I’m Heven by the way.” She directs at me.
Shooting one last dark look at Heven Maddox turns fully back to me. “And I am Maddox.” He greets in his surprisingly deep voice.
I nod in achnowldgment to them both. “Baha.”
“That’s your name?” Maddox asked in slight surprise.
A fake sort of laugh left my lips. “Yup.” I wasn’t in the mood to explain the history of my name. It was a thoroughly sore subject for me. And I still had questions that I wanted answered. Like “Why did I wake up in this room?”
“Because something very odd happened last night.” A new voice replied. The owner of the vocals entered the room and had my eyes widening. What was it with freaking tall people lately?
The man who walked in was taller than Maddox, though not by much. But still being six six was quite a conquest. Where Maddox was built like a runner or a swimmer, with long arms and legs and a flat stomach this new man was built like… a cowboy. Or a man who had gained his muscle from pure hard labor. The reason why a cowboy of all things had come to mind was because of his southern accent.
Besides his accent and summer tan there was nothing about him that reminded me of a cowboy, though he was rugges looking. The main of his hair was pulled back into a pony tail, though a few strains fell around his musculin face. His hair was the color that you thought of when you think of autumn. Brown but with amber blonde and some red high lights.
My right hand raised to run threw my hair, pulling at it a little. “I can understand that.” I said calmly. “When I woke up memories flashed threw my head, but I’m not sure how to put them together.”
The cowboy entered farther into the room, Heven moved well out of his way, while Maddox had lowered eyes and shifted to stand next Heven. The Cowboy didn’t stand as close as Maddox had, though his presence was stronger.
He was inches from the bed, maybe a foot from me with his left thumb hooked in the belt loop of his Levi jenes. The jenes were brand spanking new, the blue unfaded and fresh. While his shirt was crisp white, buttoning up the front. Though the first three buttons were left unbuttoned, showing off a taned chest with curling brown hair.
“Can you tell me what you do remember?” He asked in his drawling tone.
“Hurumph.” The vocals sounded from besides me and I jumped slightly. I’d forgotten that there had also been a dog in bed with me. I would have answered the Cowboy but now my attention was drawn to the dark eyed dog.
The jumbled memories of before crashed together in my mind, rearranging themselves and making sence to my human mind once again.
After a few moments of rolling the now fresh and in tune memories in my head I turned my head back to the Cowboy. “Well shit, I remember.” I stated frankly. “Though I couldn’t tell you what the fuck happened even if I tried.” The memories were clear when sene but it was simply too complicated to explain. How do you freaking tell someone about what had happened to me last night? Even I wasn’t completely sure.
The Cowboy sighed slowly. “Heven told me a little of what she had seen the night before, but she had told me the same thing you had. It was too complicated to explain.”
“It really is.” I laughed dryly while nodding my head. “I don’t even understand it myself and I was there.”
In a swift movement that I was slightly surprised at how fast it happened Cowboy was suddenly sitting on the bed, inches from my feet. Or maybe it wasn’t fast at all and my brain was still moving too slowly to take everything in. Movement caught my eye as the black dog started to move.
It crawled over the bed, dragging it’s body with its front paws. It’s back paws strait out behind it. It managed to scramble in between my feet and the arm of Cowboy. It’s fur was very soft against my feet, and not to mention warm. I smiled down at the black dog, thanking it silently for warming my feet. Even though the dog wouldn’t understand it I still found it necisary.
My brows furrowed as a look much like a smile spread the lips of the dog.
“His name is Landon.” The cowboy drawled, drawing me up from my pondering.
“Hello there Landon.” I greeted and sliped out my right hand. I offered it slowly, giving him time to sniff it, though he didn’t sniff it. Instead he inserted his head directly under the offered hand and made and almost purring sound.
“He likes you.” Maddox said, calling my attention back to his gray eyes.
“He better, I frigging saved his life last night.” From my memories of last night I knew that much was true. The pup had been sure as dead till I had placed my hand on him.
A large hand joined mine in messaging the dog, though the Cowboys hand wandered over Landons back. “What can you tell me about last night?”
I took in a deep breath and then let my memories out. “I walked out of the Liquor store, placed the alcohol in the back of my truck, I was about to get in my truck to go home when I heard the screatching of tires.” I tried to keep my memories short and to the point.
…
Keegan let out a small smile as he listened to the woman, who Maddox had told him her name was Baha. She was the opposite of Heven at telling stories. She got right down to the point and told only what really mattered in a storie.
“And then I knelt down, and reached out a hand…” She not only paused in telling her storie but paused in petting Landon. Her voice was soft but strong and pleasing to listen to.
I like her version of the story better then yours. He said in Hevens mind, it gained him a scowl from her but no snarky reply.
“When my hand touched him it was like my body erupted in pain, I don’t know how to explain to you what it felt like.” Her hand was still paued on top of Landons head, though he didn’t seem to mind that she wasn’t petting him. He was content as long as Baha was touching him.
“It was like…I was consumed by fire and then… a cool liquid soothed my viens… I don’t know it was very confusing and I still don’t even understand. But after that I passed out…” Her hand started moving once again, signaling that she felt more comfortable with her thoughts.
“And I woke up here.” She let out a sigh, her eyes stairing at nothing. Then suddenly she jerked, almost sending Landon tumbling to the floor. “Crap what time is it?”
Chapter Five.
I can’t believe I’d just been sitting in this room remenising when I had to be at class. I hadn’t even studied for Mrs. Kintro’s Biology test. Shit, shit, shit. I hate my life.
When no one answered me emidiatly I growled and slid off the bed. “I need to know what time it is, I have classes to be at.”
It was Heven who finaly answered me. “It’s 7 O’clock.”
I groaned, The class had already started and I probably wouldn’t make it till after the class ended. I hadted asking teacher to let me make up tests and quizzes because it set a bad example for my character.
